Caper
I'm hoping, no quarantees though, that I can start preparations to get my 55 gallon set up. Found the tape measure, so because it's still in the box the measurements are approximate and I used the converter so here goes: 55 gallon - 208 L 4' long - 121.92cm 13" wide - 33.02 cm 20" high - 50.8 cm How do you suggest I clean it out for the first time??? Do I need to fill it completely to test for leaks??? Caper
imsweet
Hi Caper, give it a good scrub out with water and leave it out in the sun (if you have sun this time of the year??) to dry. I know it's exciting but always best to fill up for a bit and leave to check for leaks.
Caryl
If this is a brand new never used before tank then I would just give it a rinse out with water to get rid of dust. You do need to fill it completely to check for leaks - preferably outside

That will be a beautiful tank when it's all set up! It's funny... when I first swapped from a 3-foot tank to a 4-foot one, it seemed so much bigger! Now I look at it in the corner of the room and think "that tank is really rather small... for the good of my fish I should really get a 6-footer!" Caper
Thanks all Oh yah, can't wait whetu!! I don't have a level place outside to do this so a bit nervous to take it outside. imsweet, the first day of spring just the other day and we have had lots of sun. However, with that said out weather can change so fast especially this time of year so again, nervous to do outside. So, okay yes Caryl this a new tank (still in box). I was wondering if I put blankets underneath it and do clean it in my kitchen that way I could slowly add water and watch for leaks and because I'd be using my vacuum that attaches to the tap I could also empty much easier and faster, do you think it's worth a try as opposed to outside where gosh only knows how fast the weather could change plus it is still quite cold. Caryl
Have you got room to move with it in the kitchen?
Navarre
Hi There, i woudlnt ever leave a tank it the sun. I was told ( and there are people better at explaining this than me) that because the different glass sheets will expand/contract at different rates when heated by the sun the will tear the seals or crack the glass when left in the sun. Unless the whole tank is lightly covered ( a towel or sheet I guess) so it heats as a whole rather than a side at a time. Caper
Yes, Caryl, my kitchen is small but I'm sure I can get the tank in there. But I'm trying to find a stand right now. Some financial situations came up (still no perm job) so back to planning this slowly and as I can afford it Caper
Caryl
A cheap stand can be made from concrete blocks (cinder blocks). You can drape some material across them to make it look neater.
