VinsonMassif
I found the easiest way was to put tank water in a container in semi shade in a warm room or sheltered area on the deck. Like under a deck chair. I added a tsp of flourish to the water. Green water abounded. Some people here are pro's at it.

Bilbo
5 ltrs of cooled boiled water and 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of milk powder or 5 ltrs of cooled boiled water and 20 x 30mm cutting of hay. 3 - 5 days to mature replace after 10 days. These 2 are more or less fool proof but can also make it with 2 mashed peas or 10 x 1cm cubes of potato or 1/2 a banana skin or scrunched lettuce leaf or chopped bloodworms. Dont go overboard with the ingredients or the culture will go off. Less is always better especially with the milk powder. Leave in shadded but not to dark and cool but not cold spot and wait till water look clear. Should be able to see them near the top. You can also squeeze out your sponge filter into the fry tank in an emergency, should be plenty in that.
lmsmith
I keep a container outside, and add some of my w/c water, and leaves off the plants in my tank, left over food etc. You'll know if it goes off if it goes from green to red and smells like a small animal crawled in it and died.
