Bilbo
I think perhaps a pair or 2 at most to begin with just to see how they settle in. It might even be an idea to form a harem of a good male and 2 or 3 of females as the females have small territories and the male will patrol the whole tank. I personally like having a few males together because they are more likely to come out and look nicer. Make sure there is loads of hiding places. Sounds counter intuitive but the easier they can get away the more they will come out.
firefish
What type of hiding places do they like? I'm thinking that if i got 6 young ones (unsexable) and grew them up. Then pick a pair out to put in my 50 litre and breed them. So if i got an even sex ratio the max pairs i'd end up with in the big tank would be 2 and the 2 blue rams.
