lmsmith
A guppy died of this today. Water quality, pH, temp all perfect. It was looking a little sad last night, so I added some salt. Today it looked like this: http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp88/laurenmariesmith/DSCF2017.jpg http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp88/laurenmariesmith/DSCF2018.jpg http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp88/laurenmariesmith/DSCF2019.jpg http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp88/laurenmariesmith/DSCF2020.jpg Everything else in the tank looks fine, so any ideas? lmsmith
I did a 30% water change last night, and 50% today when I found it dead, but the ammonia's been sitting on 0. The test kit works, because it picked up ammonia in my snail tank. My ammonia, nitrate and nitrite are all at 0, pH is 6.6 which is normal for the tank. I thought it looked like ammonia or pH burn too, but it's not around the gills, just on the sides, almost like it scraped on something. The scales aren't damaged at all though, so I'm not sure what's going on
lmsmith
All the other fish seem totally normal. That one had fry on Saturday, so I wonder if she was weakened by that?
pink_fish
Any chance it could have been injured in some way – either by being attacked by other tank mates or on something in the tank (rock or something)? If your water is all good and nobody else is sick, then maybe that could be it.

Everything else is fine, and I've been keeping up the water changes, so I'm confident that they'll all be ok.
CMC
Hi Imsmith about 3mnths ago I also had a gold female guppy develop similar looking spots on its body after giving birth and it died within 24hrs. Like you I wondered about ammonia burns however the water conditions were normal with ammonia at 0. I did not pay for a postmortem so it is still a mystery to me and I'm sorry that I am unable to help you with the cause. However if its any consolation I have not yet had any further incidences of this occurring in the tank. So I hope that this will be a one off for you too. cesarz
Hi L, I just had that same thing happenned to my test tank just two months ago but with this tank, more 50 percent of the fish were like that and several deaths occurred. The test I was doing is feeding them with freeze dried tubifex worms which I suspect harbors a lot of disease spores. I have separated them into four tanks to determine what the disease was and what treatment works for it. I tried salt, tonic, Furan, and anti-prasite None of the treatments work and the only one thet worked is green-water, all of the fish in the green water survived and recovered. But I have now euthanised all the fish because i have no idea what the disease wasa nd dont want to contaminate the other tanks. I wont be feeding with freeze dried tubifex again. lmsmith
Thanks, I don't feed my fish freeze dried tubiflex because I noticed my guppies were a lot more prone to wasting disease when I was feeding it. I hope that this female is just a one off, but I have done a salt treatment (baths and in the tank) and, touch wood, they seem ok now.
