newfisher
OK I want to have a discus tank lightly planted. This wont happen till early next year when I get my new tank. I have been doing some homework on them i the meantime. Can someone please explain to me why the Discus on trade me range from 40 then jump to 80 upwards. Is it ok to buy the cheaper ones or should I buy the 130 plus? I haven't seen many in the LFS. It is a big investment and I don't want to get them home and have them die or be stunted quality. supasi
With discus, the older they are, generally the easier they are to look after. Thats why they demand a higher price. The hard work has been done. If buying for a planted tank, I suggest getting some full grown fish. If you buy small babies, its better to grow them out in a bare bottom or similar tank. Its easier to keep the water clean, as clean water is the making of healthy discus. Dave+Amy
personally - cheaper prices usually indicate younger fish or stunted fish...whenever you buy Discus and buying from breeders that you can't physically go pick from be precise about what you want - small eye to body ratio, full fins (deformed fins are not favourable), red eyes are favourable, no peppering either (if your fish colour is prone to it). I have brought expensive ones and cheap ones but the cheap ones I tend to flick later on because they just don't end up looking as good as the ones brought from breeders/importers The price usually indicates what strain of Discus it is...common strains are cheaper etc

Dave+Amy
peppering = tiny black dots all over its body - like pepper.... pigeon bloods and Elcetric Dreams etc are prone to peppering
supasi
Personally I think some fish look great with peppering. Discus are the best, I wish I never sold mine when I did.
