tracytrout
I have 2 pairs of triple red cockatoos which have paired up and one pair have been prancing and coloured up really nicely so I decided I should seperate them because the other male and guppies kept coming over for a nosey and were getting chased away from the corner they've chosen with a rock caverns and driftwood. This pair are now set up with their own private breeding tank and with hat mission complete I started shifting the rocks from the corner they were in in the community tank to see if any eggs had been laid. I didn't see any eggs BUT on the upside of a piece of driftwood I'd say there are about 30 eggs.....What do I do? Leave the driftwood where it is as the other pair are now hanging round there, try and shift the eggs off the driftwood into breeding net...PLEASE can someone help
ryanjury
I would put the eggs in with the female that laid them and hope she is a good enough mother to raise them.. I move my females and eggs when they lay and they keep looking after them. Even if she isn't that flash its all experience and im sure one of your 2 pairs will spawn again.. tracytrout
Thanks Ryan....the driftwood she has laid the eggs on is HUGE so do you mean I should scrape the eggs off carefully and place near their new cave in breeding tank? ryanjury
I would leave them on the driftwood and leave the mum with them.. Maybe move all the other fish, if its getting too difficult don't stress they will breed again There is not much point in trying to scrape them off or anything I can't see that working out too well, I move the eggs and pot into a new tank along with the female and she continues to look after them but if you disturb things too much like move the eggs she might just eat them. Bilbo
Like what Ryan says. Do not 'scrape' them off the driftwood. Dont play just leave them alone with mum. If you havent sorted fry food yet then do it now. Remember the second best thing that can happen is that you are over prepaired with loads of food and no fry survive. Regardless of what you choose to feed them, have a big microworm culture on backup.
Dave+Amy
wow congrats Tracy!!! Mine have set up home in the corner of Christmas Moss and a terracotta pot - he chases every fish away especially the loaches but I haven't seen any eggs yet - what colour are they usually?
ryanjury
Bright orange almost the same colour as a terracotta pot Sure fire way of telling if they have bred is your female hiding somewhere and being bright yellow and probably quite skinny.. tracytrout
Yes! The eggs are a orangey colour and my male also went very yellow along his belly and his fins were continuously flared. UPDATE: The eggs on the driftwood are kind of being looked after by the other pair I have but don't think they're caring for them properly as I've seen them both out in tank at the same time, reckon it's more a case of wanting to set up home there. Meanwhile the pair I shifted into a breeding tank have settled in and are already doing the dance and picked a cave so am happy to wait and see if next time fry eventuate
ryanjury
Cool, I don't think the other pair would take up care of the eggs but stranger things have happened With your pair in the breeding tank remember that it is the female who takes care of the eggs/babies and the male can even eat the babies when they're free swimming so remove him after they have laid. And another thing do you have any photos of your fish

tracytrout
UPDATE: The female I shifted to a breeding tank with her mate has laid approx 15-20 eggs in the new cave and is guarding them very well so I took the male out and keeping my fingers crossed for fry
