Dave+Amy
where did you get your driftwood from? do you have a lid on your tank? I had a small tank growing out some babies when I realised that because of the lack of the lid all the dust was getting in. Also - has your driftwood been cleaned thoroughly? lmsmith
Could be some sort of bacterial bloom. Is it only growing over the DW? If so, I'd probably take it out and boil it, then pop it back in and see if it's still happening.
museeumchick
There is a lid on the tank, so its not a dust problem might have to take it out and boil it some more - gah! what a pain.
Caryl
Others have had a similar problem. I think it eventually goes away :-?
Caper
So, did you take the driftwood out and boil again? Did the slime go away? Caper
museeumchick
Do you think algae eating critters will sort it? (and where do i get some?) Am currently mid exams so since there are no tank inhabitants wellbeeing to be concerned with it can sit there until I have time to sort it, will let you know what happens thanks for your advice

whetu
Do you think algae eating critters will sort it? (and where do i get some?) Your description of a thick white cloud of slime sounds more like bacteria or fungus rather than algae. Personally I would make sure it's cleared up before you add any fish - much easier to sort it out in a fishless tank than trying to do it later. I suggest washing/scrubbing the wood, boiling it, then returning it to the tank and seeing whether the slime returns. It's possible it's caused by some kind of sap leaching out of the wood - in which case it could keep coming back for a long time. If that is the case, personally I would discard the wood. museeumchick
I got a little lazy and threw in a koura before fixing the slime problem, and he seems to be methodically destroying it! yay! i shall see what happens (no fish to be added until slime problem is under control) happy munching little koura
