Romeo
Hey, does anyone have any experience with one of these units? Here's the stats: Size of case = 73cm. Can adjust with mounting brackets from 73cm-91cm * CE Mark of approval * NZ plug * Non-rust, Aluminium casing * Super-thin design with adjustable brackets to cater for various size aquariums * Energy efficient and economic * Excellent light reflecting angles, ideal for fresh water and marine water * Highly polished reflector * On/off switch on end of unit * 1 year warranty from date of purchase(warranty excludes Tube) - shipment to us at purchaser's expense Please note:Cool White tube is included with this light. Also, shipping's from Auckland and the total price is $53 including shipping. Is this a fair price? I want the lamp for my Koura tank - will this do? Will it catch on fire, get destroyed in transit or just be a bad idea? Will it put out much heat and how much power will it use if it's on for 5 or so hours a day? Will it look right on my 80cm tank? Cheers, Romeo
supasi
Koura dont need a light, you do,lol Yeah should be fine. Have a look at some of your local shops as you may be able to pick up one withou the risk of shipping. I got a light identical to the one you were after on that other place for about $50.00 new from a pet store in Nelson. Because koura are nocturnal you will find that if the light is to bright they will hide all the time.Could always get a couple of those small halogen desk lamps from the warehouse for $20.00each. Cos you wont be growing plants it wont matter what spectrum the light is.
Romeo
Ah true, good call. I'll have to shop around. I've had a look in most of the Christchurch pet shops and they're ALL over $100 (even the wee baby ones!). The low power use appealed to me though. Do you have any more suggestions for what I could use?
supasi
Most fluoro lights use little power compared to an incandesant bulb. the size your looking at would be no more than 20 watts(cheaper than boiling the jug a couple of times a day anyway) Im always on the look out for lighting for myself, but Im a plant nut so only look for lighting strong enough for growing with, but for a koura tank you could get away with anything really. Go to a shop like Lighting Direct or something and see what they got. Those halogen desklamps are about 14 watts I think, again cheap to run and quite compact with telescopic height adjustment.
