supasi
Ok for the record, Im a complete novice when it comes to bettas. Never kept them before so forgive me if it seems like a stupid question. Is it normal for the female to beat up on the male? Had the female in a floating container and the male was flaring and showing off, he built a nest and the female started to show vertical markings. released the female, but now the male is running and hiding and has had a fair bit of his fins nipped. Is this a common occurance? Have since seperated them again
Guest
I'm pretty sure that it depends on the fish. Sometimes the male attack the female and sometimes they'll both have a go at each other. I suppose you have a passive male and an aggro female  . Maybe try with a different female? Someone whos had it happen to them will be a better help. antznz
Ive had the same problem myself good advise form Cam otherwise leave the male alone in the tank for a week or two without female near at all...hopefully you have a 2nd tank? then try again at a later date otherwise go with Cam's Advise & you may have some luck also it's taken me 2-3 attempts to get it to happen the first time as a breed have also found they pref stormy weather Good Luck
Guest
thanks antznz. Yeah mine took 4-6 trys before spawning properly (and him not eating the eggs). It can get really annoying but keep trying if he eats the eggs. Hope it all gos well
Catfish
I had a female like that once. Tried her with several different males and she hated them all no matter what. In the end I just sold her off and worked with my other ones instead. :-?
supasi
...hopefully you have a 2nd tank? Of course i do. There are more tanks in my house than what Ive seen at one of our local pet shops, lol I do have another female that i will try him with. Am going to seperate them and try again with this one first as i prefer her colours. Thanks
