SilverBlade86
Basically, I've filled my tank with Dalton's Aquatic Mix as well as some sand and pebbles. I've done one water change so far with the water slowly dribbling into the tank. So does changing the water help or should I just leave it to settle after a few days? I'm pretty sure the driftwood I have isn't leeching tanins into the water. Thanks.
Snorkel
If it doesnt clear up noticeably in 4 or 5 days, I'd syphon 90% out, then refill with clean/clear water. It's so hard to be patient thou, eh!
SilverBlade86
Yeah. The tank was just remade yesterday. Dad and I just did a 75% water change and am just waiting for the water to slowly fill the tank. So far visibility looks good. I am able to see the driftwood as well as the Java Moss we just tied on. Much better than yesterday and this morning when visibility of the tank was pretty much nil. Will wait for a couple of days now. Then I'll do another water change and replace half with the old tank water I saved before the tear down.
VinsonMassif
Do you have any fish in it? Do 75% water changes daily. With the water going into a bowl sitting on a plate in the tank. You need a good 3-4 cm of stones on top of the daltons to stop the cloudiness. What filter are you running on the tan?
SilverBlade86
No fish in it at the moment. Just gonna let everything settle before putting the fish in. I have about 3-4cm of sand/pebbles on top of the Daltons. To be honest, I felt the Dalton's wasn't enough, as I used a whole bag for my tank (a 3 footer). So I topped it off with a bit more sand/pebbles instead. No filter in the tank at the moment. But I do have a CF1200 that's currently running on the spare tank with all the fish in it. Will probably move them in a few days. About 75% of the water in the tank with the fish in it is tank water, so I'll just transfer water over to the new tank. VinsonMassif
Cool as. So with no fish in it or filter on it you can do as many 100% water changes as it takes to clear out the silt. You don't need to wait for anything, or let it settle. In fact if you are not using a gravel vac I recommend you stir up the silt with your hands when you are doing the 100% water changes. This will get rid of it quickly.
SilverBlade86
Ohh, sweet as. As of tonight, I'm gonna chuck in my heater into the tank and warm up the water a bit more. I'll do a water change and put some old tank water into it and chuck a couple of fish in there. If they survive for a couple of days I'll slowly reintroduce the rest. Edit - Nearly forgot. As I now have sand in the tank, I am after some fish that goes pretty much stays and wanders around in it. So far I'm going to get some BNs and Cories (not sure about Loaches, those are expensive and a bit harder to maintain). Are there any other fish that will suit the tank? Keep in mind that I will have 2 pairs of Kribs in there and about 5 or so caves so theres not much room for cave dwellers.
