kd123
Do any of the people who keep discus on this forum have any experience with either of these dosing protocols? Can someone clarify the description in the below article on metro? He suggests dosing the tank and leaving it for 8 hours. Doing a water change and then dosing again. Is this left in the tank for another 8 hours with another water change after that? He says to repeat this cycle for three days. Does that mean dosing 9 times over three days or just twice a day leaving a gap of 8 hours between each set of two doses? Also the second article from Simply Dicus.com. It has a different protocol!!! 1. <<< * A 30% water change prior to dosing * A temperature of 30oC * 250mg of metronidazole / 10gallons of aquarium water. * After 8 hours 25% water change is performed followed by another 250mg of metronidazole / 10gallons of aquarium water. * This cycle is repeated for three days * Note: mortar and pestle the tablet/s, add a drop of warm aquarium water and mix to thick paste; keep adding drops until you have a thinner paste; – you can then add more water, mix thoroughly and spread over the aquarium.>>> 2. The recommended treatment for Hexamita / Spironucleus is metronidazole (Flagyl). Metronidazole can be administered in a bath at a concentration of 5 mg/L (18.9 mg/gallon) every other day for three treatments. jolliolli
in the past i have used 400mg/40L every 8 hours with a waterchange every day, i have used this course for 5 days and made 50% waterchanges in between. Metro loses its effectiveness after 8 hours hence the redosing. This does use a lot of metro hence why you should isolate the affected individual as it becomes expensive to treat a large tank. The last time i used i actually dosed the metro in the food, this uses much less metro and means you can keep the fish in your main display tank while dosing. This of course assumes your fish are still eating, dosing within the food is thought to be more effective than dosing as a bath. I boiled up some tetrabits and made them in to a mush with the metro added along with gelatine. Gelatine was then cut in to bite size segments, mine weren't too keen on the taste but i figure they must have ingested some as they got better after a 3 day course of this. If you want the in food dosage rate i can check and find it out for you
