Dog-eating Tetra
i have a big problem- i have a bubble nest from my pair of dwarf gouramis but my ph has goten down to about 6. it would be near impossible to change water without distubing or destroying nest. i don't want my ph so low but i can't bring myself to destroy the nest as i have never had any fish breed before. the male is new as my other died. the bubble nest is reaching 2 1/2 weeks old now and i'm not sure if that means it's not fertile. the male was guarding furiously in first week or so and all other fish wouldn't go higher than 10cm in the tank. it is a 75 litre aqua one ar-580 community tank. other stock are bout 4-6 glowlight tetras, 6-7 neon tetras, 2 bristlenoses, 1 guppy(sole surviver of 7) and the pair of dwarf gouramis. i need to do a water change as it is getting 1.5-2weeks overdue. please help. mitzy
First of all they wouldn't survive in a community tank. You would need a breeding tank of about 30 litres or more just for them. They hatch in a couple of days , temp in mid 80's. Its will be just a bubble nest without any eggs. Also need a sponge filter in a breeding tank so the babies dont get sucked up. Hope thats helps
Dog-eating Tetra
ok thanks, so i'm not gonna kill off any fry or anyhting? and it may be good to get rid of nest as the other fish cna act normal again?
Dog-eating Tetra
oh i just thought, what do they look like when they're mating? because i saw them when nest was new sort of curled up in each other right by the nest. this just courting? I have not breed these myself but my mum has. The male wraps around the female and releases the eggs. They wont have a chance in a community tank as the other fish will eat them or the babies when they hatch. If there is eggs you should be able to see them in the bubble nest but as I said they wont survive. Doing a water change will be fine he will build another nest. mumzy50
I breed dwarf gouramis. You can not breed them in a community tank, yes they will build a nest and spawn but wont survive the least you ether need a bigger tank that you can divide or three small tanks.I run on three tanks and that's not anoth.Have a look at my posts and you will get an idea of what you need.Eggs will hatch in twenty four hours or less at eighty, lower temps take longer but if they have not hatched after three days they have had it.I would do a water change before you fish get sick. Then test your pH you should get a higher reading.Good luck
