kokako
Hi i am new to breeding cichlids and have a few questions My firemouths have breed and fry are now about 1-2.5 cm, have moved the parents to a diff tank as these young ones grow. I am just wondering at what size it is generally safe to move them? I don't mind hanging on to them at this stage! i have seen cichlids of this size on TM, are they likely to survive transport? Also i read that some ppl syphin fry out of tanks, even out of parents mouths, do you get a good survival rate doing this? i once sucked up a guppy by accident when doing a water change and it killed him instantly. ryanjury
You can syphon them into a tank filled with water from their tank, but only when they're small and cant swim well or aren't too big to be munched by the syphon hose. How old are these fish? They would probably be fine to move on at 2cmish but you won't get much for them and will be limited as people will have to grow them out before adding them to tanks with larger fish.. I strip and move my africans at 2weeks and have very minimal losses I have found africans to be extremly hardy, have even stripped fish straight out of their parents mouths that aren't even swimming bagged them and left them bagged for 2 hours taken them home and had no losses...
