Trouble with AR980 light hood

Couple of quick questions - I'm having trouble with the lights on my ar980

The hood has 3 x lights, two longer ones 90cm i think(30W) and one shorter one 60 cm.

I can't get the shorter one working, I bought new tubes for it and replaced the little round thing (starter?) but I was told its the ballast that needs replacement but I can't find one anywhere!

Where's the best place to get one? Or is it better to just replace the whole light fixture?

And i bought some arcadia 30w tubes from LFS bcoz they told me those are the best ones to have but its still not enough light the tank looks so dim.. if anyone has advice that would be great.

Wire up a 240v 20w(100w normal) power saver bulb or 2. They work well. make sure the bulb is around 6500k.

My suggestion is to get someone who knows what they are doing to wire it up. Water and electricty do NOT make a good mix as it is. let alone dodgey wiring.

Trust me. Shocks from the mains plug are not fun.hurts like hell for ages.

DIY, Theres nothing easier.

The shocks dont hurt, they just make all the muscles and tendons etc in your hand close up lol  Very weird feeling,no pain though.

But what i dont get is, How will you get a shock if its all wired up into the hood? And if you get a shock while making it, WHy would it be plugged in, Ive only ever got one shock from mains, out of all the lights i have wired in and that was in the centre of my palm. :D

Unplugged - Capacitors discharging = shocks

Plugged - Bad connections earthing via you or your household items causing a fire or death.

can i use another ballast from another light hood or will that completely fry the lights? this isn't something i'm very good at doing   might need to get hubby to give it a crack

We have a complete set of ballasts, holders and tubes I ripped out of our AR980 when we upgraded to a marine tank. You're welcome to them if you want them for the cost of the freight. We won't need them as the 980 has now become our sump :D
