beeko
i hear it was easy for platies to breed. I am yet to have one breed, my males always die before hand i think. females have lasted, but males seem to die after about 2 weeks. There is plenty of groundcover and java moss if the girls decide to give birth, but they balloon up and down and i have never seen anything come of it. any suggestion? Caryl
It isn't ground cover they need but floating plants. Java moss is excellent. Water sprite is good too. They will drop fry (assuming they have been inseminated at some point - remember females can produce several spawnings without a male) every 4 - 6 weeks. booger
why do you need floating plants? is that in case the little critters dont survive to reach the java moss on the bottom? cheers susan
Caryl
The fry zip all over the place but spend quite a bit of time higher up rather than at the bottom. Livebearers are usually found in the middle water level of a tank so that's where you need the hiding places.
booger
i have got fry not sure who had them, platy swordtail or guppie they kinda look the same at the moment but they all sit at the bottom of the tank. they are in there alone no plants or parents is this ok for them
Caryl
They will be fine with no parents or other fish to eat them. They will sit on the bottom if there is no cover for them as they feel safer camouflaged against the gravel.
livebearer_breeder
If they all sit on the bottom, they will most likely be platy, i find that when my guppies give birth the babies automatically become active, same with my sordtails and mollies, but my platy babies always spend the first few days liying on the ground.
