peanut2110
Hi there, Just wondering if anyone out there has one of these and whether they can tell me if they are any good or not. I am researching all the cannister filter options at present to find out which will be the best option on my new 580litre tank that I will be putting in our new house in a few months time. :bounce: Dimenions of the tank are 1.6m long x 0.6m deep x 0.6m high. Fish will include those listed below plus an A. Jacob, A. Baenschi, A. Rubescens, C. Azureus and 4 pairs of rainbowfish (red, blue, gold and boesmani). I want to ensure I have really good filtration and a good water flow rate. Don't know whether I am best to go for 2 x cannister filters or 1 x monster filter. Any advice on what you have found works best for you would be appreciated. Cheers!
ryanjury
FX5 You will probably find one 2400 lacking on that tank I ran a 404 and a 900LPH aqua one on my 5 x 2 x 2 probably around what a single 2400 would turn over and it worked but not very well got an FX5 and its wicked.. Bearing in mind mine is full and yours will be relatively empty you could start with a single 2400 and add another down the track if needed even with the smaller filters I could get away with water changes every 2 weeks it was just alot of cleaning of filters (every 2 weeks as opposed to 2 months for FX5). And they didn't pick up as much crap as the FX5 either.
peanut2110
Thanks Ryan - I was wondering about the FX5 as well but with only one uptake tube, I wasn't sure just how much rubbish they would suck up. Where is yours positioned in the tank exactly? I saw blueandkims comments on an earlier thread about their FX5 and they seem really happy with it as well altho I seem to recall them running an additional filter to the FX5 as well. Up to what size tank are the FX5 rated for? ANd what filter medium do you have in yours - I seem to recall they don't come with any media and you have to get that yourself... I think I saw HFF advertising a special price on their FX5 - maybe I will go and check it out when I am in Akld next!
Aquarium Dude
Is that filter like the aqua one 2400? I think it is, I have the 2200 and think its kind of rubbish, the quality sucks, both handles have broken off and upon closer inspection there was very little holding them in the first place. I would definetly not buy another aqua one filter (or similar) and would probably pick an Fx5 or Ehiem Classic.
ryanjury
Eheim classic would be too small you would have to go for one of the eheim pro's which is big big $$ for that tank.. FX5 is rated for 1500L tank but I would run 2 if I had a tank that big probably max 1000L lightly stocked.. The intake is massive I have it at one end and the outlet as far towards the other end as possible pointing keeping things stirred up.. Seems to do the job. Mine came with media because I brought it second hand, I believe it comes with the sponges you just have to get biomedia noodles and the like which you can buy from shops or might have lying around it does take a heap of it though I emptied 3 cycled filters worth into mine when I got it. I think that blue ran another filter for CO2 or something? Another great thing is it comes with a spare hose attachment and you stick an inch and a half pipe on it and it and use it to pump the water out for your water changes.. Aquarium Dude
Oh, I didnt read it properly, I would definetly go for the FX5
Ant N
Maybe look at the CristalProfi from JBL, good value . You could over filter with 2 of these for $
peanut2110
Thanks for that Ant N. I saw your earlier comments about this model filter. How long have you had it now and are you still very happy with it? I do quite like the idea of two filters just in case one has a problem... Similarly I think I will probably go with two heaters for the exact same reason. I like the FX5 as well but even on special at $485 it's $100 more than 2 of these and I still have to buy all the media which would have to be a fair few bucks worth! As I get nearer the time, I might check in with you again, just to see how your filter is doing and if you still think they are good value for money. If so, I think I'll end up going the same way...
