Whitespot treatment for loaches???

Hi guys

I have a community tank which includes Platys, BN's, Kuhli's & Clown loaches. I'v had whitespot once before but that was before I got the Loaches & I've heard that you cant use Whitespot treatment on Loaches, is that right? The whitespot was brought in by a new Platy which didn't show any sign of it til day 3. I have TONIC & WHITESPOT treatments, which one is best to use, or is there something different that I could get?

Cheers

I would start by testing your water to determine why otherwise healthy fish would catch whitespot - whitespot is present in all freshwater anyway, and only weakened fish catch it (healthy fish can repell the parasite no problem at all) - you will probably find you need to do some tank maintenance, including a large water change. Use the whitespot treatment if there is no improvement after 2 days.

Don't use full strength chemical treatments on loaches ..... slime coat fish!

I had it myself and this is what worked for me.

Remove carbon from filter if you use it. Use "1/2" strength chemical treatment (White Spot Cure) and raise the water temp slowly over 24 hours or so to 30C (no more). Keep your eye on temp sensative fish and you may need to remove plants. Aeration will help and gravel vac 50% of the water between treatments (3 treatments) and allow for the changes when dosing. A UV steralizer will help if you have one.

Good luck

My two new clown loaches developed whitespot a couple of days after arriving - I treated the whole tank with quarter strength whitespot cure and no probs since- I used the count the drops method - the drops always seem way too big to be 0.1 ml hence quarter strength. I raised the tank temperature by two degrees too. One dose seemed to fix the problem. Good luck with sorting it all out.
