sub.z
How do you know whether your pleco is getting enough food or not? I hardly see mine and he always misses out on the algae tabs I put in cucumber weekly but dont know whether he eats any or not
Ianab
Put the food in at night, plecos are generally nocturnal and feed at night while the other fish sleep. Mix up the veges and feed them every 2nd night. Cucumber, courgette, mushroom, kumera, green beans, peas.. they eat them all. Finally have a look at the plecos belly... if it's rounded then it's getting enough to eat. Cheers Ian
sub.z
Ok cool ill try that All my goldfish think the algae tabs are for them Would it matter if the pleco didnt get that and just ate veges?
Ianab
Would it matter if the pleco didnt get that and just ate veges? Nope, the pleco will live fine on veges, algae and leftovers. Try the tablets at night, I guess you will never really know who is eating them, but if the tank is dark I bet it's the pleco Also if the plec gets really hungry it will take on a goldfish over food  Cheers Ian

diffgirl
Hey there, i noticed you mentioned that you are keeping him/her with goldfish, and I wondered if you have any river wood in the tank with them, because for plec's it is a very important part of their diet, it not only gives them the extra nutrients and vitimans and minerals they need for healthy digestion but the roughage is essential too, even if you just have a small piece for it to munch that would be enough, cause I tell ya that is what ours spend the most part of their day doing, munching the wood. Another thing ours love is shrimp pellets, they are sinkers and after a min or so they disolve a bit and scatter all over the bottom of the tank, the other fish all eat them too but what we do is fill the other fattys up on flake and all the other foods they like first and drop the pelets in at the end of feeding, then turn their lights off and the smell of them is so strong that our guys must smell it in the water and they come out to eat them pretty much straight away. The ones we use are the wardley ones, and the small tub lasts for ages. Hope this may help, all the best, Kristy

But, I didn't know you could feed them vegies that often, I was only giving the veg once a week. Should I be feeding my ottos vegies more often? Caper Ottos prefer fine algae to veges - they might take some interest from time-to-time, but algae is their favourite.
