I am trying to beed them so I can chuck them in my pond outside to see if they'll clear the algae (don't worry the fish will take care of the majority of them so I won't get overrun) I put them in their tank today and bought some oxygen weed off the petstore. An hour after I had set it all up with the water, the two snails and oxygen weed I noticed a baby snail....then I noticed another one.....and another! Problem is they are not ramshorn and I have no idea what they are! They hitch-hiked with the oxy weed They are black, conical shaped shells. A couple have small spikes. The only way I can think of describing it is its like a ramshorn except the horn has unravelled out to the side. It isn't like the malaysian trumpet snail. The spikes are what have me baffled! helen101 Posted October 28, 2007 Author Report Share Posted October 28, 2007 They have medium sized wide side spiral black shells Some have long spikes, some have stubby spikes When I say long spikes I mean only just 1mm or 1 1/2mm They have long antennas They are fast moving I have seen a couple walking on the water, upside down (so that they're "foot" is facing the surface) but when I go near it it makes itself sink quickly Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

imsweet Posted October 28, 2007 Report Share Posted October 28, 2007 They sound like common pond snails. They will breed worse than flies but will be great out in your pond. The larger ones leave good tracks in the algae but they all clean up after the fish. I have some in the fry tubs and bare bottomed tanks just to clean up. We have large goldfish in our pond which will give them a run for their money I just don't want to use chemicals to get rid of the stuff Thought I'd give the snails a go Thanks for your help It has been greatly appreciated!
