ctsniper86
I've seen that you can get "moon" lights for marine tanks that allow you to watch the nocturnal habits of the fish etc. Would this work on a freshwater tank for nocturnal fish? Ianab
Yup, some of the pleco keepers do that so they can see their shyer fish out and about. You can make your own with some blue / white LEDs and a bit of basic wiring. All you really need is a low intensity light, just enough to see the fish, but dark enough so they think it's twilight and come out to feed. John Rimbauer
I put one on my 2ft tank using 2 blue LED's, 2 resistors, some stereo speaker cable, and an old DC powerpack from a phone. It was very easy to do, and I put the powerpack on a plug in timer. That way it comes on for four hours around midnight. It means you can see the nocturnal fish, and it looks cool when the house lights are off. Also, no stubbed toes when getting a drink at 2 in the morning! From a practical point of view, waterproofing the connections is important, and LED's tend to throw about a 30 degree cone of light, so it's very much a spotlight effect.
