David R
A box in the corner and a hole drilled in the back/side/bottom is the best way IMO. My 4' has just got a hole drilled in the back at the water-line with a cone over the pipe to stop smaller fish getting sucked in and IMO its not as good. I wouldnt even bother with the hang-on-the-back ones unless the tank is already set up. I'm not sure what other types of overflow there are. I'd go for a pump with 3-10 times the volume turn over (make sure you take into account the head) depending on how you're going to stock it. Two pumps would be better than one large one, that way if one fails you'll still have the filter working.
Ira
Google durso standpipe. And I'd suggest a pump around 4000-5000 LPH. You'll lose a good chunk of that from the head height and plumbing restrictions.

Ira
Hmmm, I'd assumed he was doing an normal intank overflow since he didn't mention a HOB overflow.

David R
So what does that actually do, make it quiet or something?
HaNs
If i was going to build a "normal" over flow how far down from the top would the holes be and what size glass box attached to the tank?
