anthony law
have you tested for copper in your tank as some medication has it in it.most fish can handel it. but loches cant ??/
jn
Could you put them into their own tank so you can keep a better eye on what they eat? Will also be easier if you ever decide to try some form of treatment since no one else seems affected.
michael.qian
Poor guy looks like he's going to die any second now. Yesterday he spent the entire day on his side in a cave, today he wouldn't even eat the food when it was right in front it him. And he's in a very poor shape, having trouble swimming upright, flips on his side often. Improvement in the other bigger skinny loach though, eats bloodworms like normal today, bought some new bloodworms today that might made the difference, it's the much thicker type and looks to be better quality. jn
well thats good news about the one other at least. Can you try the worse one in an icecream container with shallow water? Might be easier to keep him upright and keep him very close to some food (dunno what temp they need or if it's warm enough up there yet to keep him without a heater) Might be best if it doesn't die in the tank and contaminate the others with whatever he's struggling with. (edit: my what poor typing that was on my behalf...better now!)
michael.qian
Yes that might a good idea, will do that now, but did put him in a big fish net to start with but thought that wasn't very practical.
jn
hang on actually.. I seem to recall someone saying once they floated an ice cream container in the tank.. that would keep it at the right temp at least. Dunno how you'd keep if from floating around in the current though?
michael.qian
dead already found a clean container to put him into but he was already dead on the bottom, from the looks of him this afternoon I knew it wasn't going to last much longer. Hope the other one gets well, will keep feeding the new bloodworms from now on.
evilknieval69
Lots of food and lots of water changes. Hopefully the other one will survive. Sorry to hear of your loss
jn
Sorry to hear is too.... Really good though that the other is picking up.. keep us posted
michael.qian
no worries. I have two options. 1. If the other skinny one gets well, then I will keep them, with only two loaches no hierachy would be established so hopefully no bullying. 2. Worst case scenario, if the other skinny one eventually dies as well, I will sell the healthy one, my tank won't be big enough to keep them in about 2 years time, have plans to upgrade in the future though. This skinny one is still always active so that's a good sign.
ryanjury
I would think 2 of any fish would be worst case scenario for bullying as the aggression cannot be spread out? And apparently the clown loaches are alot happier in larger groups? Hope the fish picks up hopefully they dont have internal parasites! michael.qian
I've seen and read quite a few people keep just two and apparently they always hang out together like they are best friends, wish mine are like that. I know what you mean by aggresion can't be spread out if I only keep two. Right now the healthy one is still a bully, it would chase the other skinny one almost every time they are close together. Or... If this one gets better, maybe I should get two more? Just worried my tank isn't big to accomodate 4, even though I plan to upgrade within 2 years time. David R
yeah get at least two more once the other one is better!! The more the merrier with CL's
michael.qian
so 4 will be ok in a tank my size for now? both of my current ones are about 6cm long, or maybe 5cm. should I try to get ones the same size? Because in fish shops they are usually a bit smaller.
David R
Depends how bit a tank you're upgrading to and how far away that is. It sounds like your water is pretty good, so I'd say it'll be fine.
michael.qian
Yup water is quite good, nitrate at 15ppm and no ammonia or nitrite. The refund for the Eheim 2224 I got is coming in tomorrow, so will use that money to buy a AquaOne CF1200, when I get that water quality should hopefully be even better.
