Imported fish

Hi,

Ive been told that many of the fish in pet shops are imported. Does this mean that they are wild caught? (or just bred in captivity overseas). I was especially wondering about tetras like the neon, cardinal etc.

Just curious : )

Yes.. most of the common affordable fish a 'farm' bred ones.

Some of the exotic expensive ones are still wild caught, but if you stick to the 'common' fish it's almost certain they are captive bred.

As a side track, I believe that some species (like Red tail black sharks) are actually extinct in the wild because of environment loss and pollution etc. Good thing someone caught a few and introduced them to the aquaruim world first. OK, so most of the breeding population live in fish ponds in SE Asia, but it beats being extinct ;)

Cheers

Ian

Hi All.

You might be interested to know that in some countries were the importers used to get our fish from have now banned the catching of fish in the wild for export.

This does not apply to a lot of countries but it does apply to some.

Some of the species we used to be able to get many years ago are now on the "CITES" list.
