Dixon1990
What exactly do they do?
snookie
i think they are a slow release
jn
intended for plants that are root feeders (with rhisomes) I think.. like java fern etc.
paekakboyz
I thought Java ferns absorbed nutrients through the water? I've used the fert balls for amazon swords and they seem to do a good job - just whack one down near the base and watch it go. they def seem to be slow release as well - I just redesigned the tank and found most of the fert balls to be around 3/4's their starting size and they'd been in the tank for over 6 months... if you haven't laid any daltons or laterite down in the substrate these would probably be a good option... HummingBird
Yeah they're made for root feeders like jn says, not java fern though (which you're right does absorb right from the water column) but swords and crypts and whatnot. jn
Sorry!! I was just coming back to change that to swords! Thanks for correcting me. (java fern is the one that often gets attached to driftwood right? They tend to rot if you stick them in the substrate? I've never had either so I got them confused!!) Dixon1990
WOuld these work for mouses ear(Saururus cernuus )?
alanmin4304
Mouses ear is not a true aquatic, grows very slowly and requires good light. It is a heavy feeder when grown emersed and has a very heavy root system. I think when submersed it is probably struggling to stay alive. A nice we plant when it does. Dixon1990
Mine is growing good in a unheated tank with no lights and growing runners in a tank with low lighting
Dixon1990
I got some of the JBL fert balls and my new special red sword has grown about 3-4 new leaves since i put the ball in about 6 days ago.Is this good growth? And would these balls help Vallisneria grow faster?
alanmin4304
They provide the micronutrient that may be missing. I think they are basically dried clay
