HaNs
Im wanting to change my 300L to to a new one. Im going to a sand substrate from small rocks. Im using a fx5 as my filter on my existing and new tank. Im concerned that if i change substrates in the new thank their wont be the right amount of bacteria in the substrate. Could i put the old substrate in a bucket and place it in the tank for a few weeks so i dont have to cycle? Im also putting the drift wood into the new tank, so it would have some bacteria on it. I plan on having 4 datnoids, 1 bichir and 2 hoplos(could be a oscar as im selling him)
Caryl
I would have thought there would be enough bacteria in the filter alone to do the job.
Ianab
The total number of bacteria will take a hit in the planned change over, but you should be OK as your existing filter is cycled and the bacteria in the filter will multiply and spread to new substrate. It's not like cycling a tank from scratch. Best to go easy on the feeding for the first week to avoid any serious ammonia spike, but your plan should work OK. Cheers Ian
