Swampy
Hi guys. Am looking at setting up a reef tank soon.Have done a lot of research on the net and in various books and mags and think i now have a fair understanding of how things work.We have a limited marine base here in hamilton.Just a few shops that sell afew fish and corals etc althoe world of water is setting up shop here next month which will be good.I was woundering if other stores in auckland will sell live rock to me or will i have to start of with the dry rock.was also woundering if there is much trading of corals between reefers.Hope to have things up and running soon so i can start enjoying the ups(and occasional downs)that come with the terratory.cheers
davidb
yep there is Places you can buy Live rock in Auckland. And there are quite a few hamiltonian reefkeepers out there who will be happy to sell and trade corals. Not many use this site however But do tell us your plans for your tank... And welcome to FNZAS-Forum. There is a Welcome section if you want to introduce yourself
reef
.I was woundering if other stores in auckland will sell live rock You cant get liverock in Nz other than cycled rock or if you are lucky some rock from someone tank. If you want to be successful in keeping a marine tank it is best to take your time so stating with base rock is not a big deal. So many hobbyist run out and get cycled rock then try to set up the tank in a short space of time but have problems. Get yourselve a big bin now and put some base rock in with saltwater and a airpump. leave it for 2 months and by the time you have finished setting your tank up you can just add the rock to your main tank and it should be ready for stock in another week if all tests are ok. I found that hobbysit that take their time seem to have much better success. One word of advice is dont go cheap as this is a major downfull, do research on all the equipment you need and get the best you can with your budget. JDM
nice to know i had a lasting impression on you wasp  Yes, both me and rossco and others are in Hamilton, i am very busy at the moment, but may be able to spare some time in a month or so, probably too late to help you get started but the best advise i can offer is buy quality first time, this means do not buy cheap skimmers or other components for the set up, budget at least $500 for a skimmer and the same for lighting and about the same for water flow, trust me, if you buy a cheap item you will buy a more expensive one later. also i will add that if the thought of spending $5000 plus on a reef tank seems expensive, i would not bother setting one up. it is expensive to be in this hobby, its an ongoing expense that dose get cheaper with time but will always be costing something. so that said if you have a spare 5k to throw at a hobby, go for it, it is very enjoyable and IMHO it is money well spent. i will get in touch with you once things quiet down for me.
