stargazer
Hi I was getting ready to add a gallon of water to top off my tank, smelled a funny oder. I checked the ammonia in the tap water and got a reading of 3 so I used a jug of spring water. But, I don't want to be lugging water from the store every week if I don't have to. Does anyone have any ideas to help out ?
Alan
What happens when you jet your water into a container and leave it for a day with an airstone. If the ammonia has been put in by your water company, then it will be as a gas and it should dissipate.
alanmin4304
I know of no reason to add ammonia to a water supply---sounds a bit strange.
Alan
Alan, did you see where he is from?? Anything could happen there!!
alanmin4304
Just realised you are in the US. They may be using ammonia and chlorine to manufacture chloramine as a disinfectant and for some reason the ammonia only is in the system (run out of chlorine?) Ianab
Sounds like a case where you definately SHOULD use water conditioner - BEFORE the water goes anywhere near the tank Ian
alanmin4304
I don't think it will get rid of ammonia.
Ianab
It doesn't get rid of ammonia as such, I think it converts it to ammonium (which isn't so toxic) then lets your filter take care of that. Prime™ is the complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water. Prime™ removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Prime™ converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter http://www.seachem.com/products/product_pages/Prime.html I cant vouch for how well it works, I dont need to use it here, but it has to be better than topping up a tank with 3ppm ammonia Cheers Ian
