Andrew_W
I'm going to plant it, Do I leave it attached to the main plant, or cut it off. Its growing from my amazon sword.
jude
I always cut them off once the roots have grown so I'd say cut it off.

Alan
Notice what way it is growing from the parent stem, and gently push it backwards from where it leans. This shoud snap off neatly with little or no trauma to the stem or the plant.
alanmin4304
I would go with the other Alan. Dont cut the stem as the plants become loose when they have developed enough roots to support themselves and you may get more plants off that stem. Andrew_W
are you saying it should eventually just fall off itself when its ready?
Alan
No, we are saying that when it is mature enough it will snap off easily without damaging the plant or the stem.
Zev
So is he supposed to snap it off at the plantlet end, leaving the stalk sticking out, rather than at the base of the mother plant?
alanmin4304
Yes. If you think about it you may conclude that Mrs Nature is not sitting up there with a pair of scissors. Many people lose a lot of plants by cutting the runners off as there are often smaller plants on the runner that will develop later if left. Alan
If you cut of the stem, it is like going to Maingatonoka and breaking the production chain. Then what are all those lovely workers going to do?? Yeah right!!
alanmin4304
Echinodorus sp. (amazon swords) when grown emersed will produce flowers and plants but generally not roots unless planted. Underwater they produce roots as well and when well rooted become loose on the runner and can be carefully prized off, often leaving other smaller plants that will then go on to develop, sometimes months later.
