jayci
Do I need a protein skimmer for a small 50ltr rock pool tank? I was thinking about going to raglan and getting small rock pool animals and the saltwater from there too.
coelacanth
you don't "need" a protein skimmer, they just make things better. For local rockpool critters you can get by just on a simple filter, a chiller for the summer if it gets hot where you are, and they appreciate lots of water movement too. Good thing about rockpool stuff is that you can just let it go again, get different things....it is cool keeping a rockpool tank
reef
You don’t need a skimmer for any tank, however giving the animals the best water quality we see them doing much better as the skimmer will remove organics from the water. Keeping a 50ltr tank is not easy as with such small water quantity the parameters can change really quickly, especially in summer with the hot temperatures. davidb
None of the tanks at the museum run skimmers. If you do big water changes you will be sweet
