Billaney
Hi Yes i know they have a new name but i think the old one suites them better but either way , for the 7 or 8 people who have pm'ed me about these guys , i'm very pleased to say i've spawned them again, got free swimmers and quite a few eggs looking like they still have to hatch and still more sticking to the glass ,

fishy_t
Yeah - they are the only non-african, non-cichlid I would consider keeping I think! One day I'll have a wee nano for some
Billaney
Billaney Can you tell me your setup and conidtions to incourage spawning? I set up a bare tank with a large breeding box ( see AW for description of breeding box ) Filled the breeding box with lots of jave moss and odd plants leaving some free swimming space. They had previouslt been very well fed. The layed the 2nd night with what can only be described as eye watering large eggs, few days later, fry
jayci
What about tank temp ph. Any changes in these to tigger spawning?
Billaney
What about tank temp ph. Any changes in these to tigger spawning? the temp was 25 C with a Ph of 7.2 , nothing special about water conditions and i used a sponge filter which was mature and also which the fry will feed off. Luke*
Great news Billaney well done! What's the dH and KH of your water down there? (if you used straight tap?) Do you know if 7.2 pH is ideal? I couldn't find the pH or hardness of their natural habitat in any articles I've read so far. Cheers

Cheers Sorry Luke* I have no idea of the dH or KH never tested for it , its stright from the tap with a little aqua plus to take the nasty's out, as for if its ideal ? who knows but it works
fishy_t
If they come from a swamp its likely to be slightly acid I'd say...
Luke*
Mmm the water they're found in is clear so I'm not sure. Some paraphrased habitat points from the article at: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/p ... ?news=1210 The area contains dense growths of Elodea and Anacharis Roberts wrote: "The fish lives in small heavily vegetated ponds apparently maintained by seepage in hilly grassland at an elevation of about 1040m/3420ft near Hopong town." "The ponds are small and shallow, at most perhaps 30cm deep, and maintained by seepage or springs. The water is clear unless roiled with recorded temperatures of 22-24C in January 2007. The present terrestrial vegetation is open grassland." Bit ironic that Practical Fishkeeping want everyone to breed them but don't provide all the details. Maybe no one's tested for everything yet? fishy_t
Yeah - its great that they aren't collecting from the wild, but someone should go and test the water!!
