davidb
i would set it up as a central american cichlid tank! perfect size for those nice big central american fish u never had space for before
malawi_man
Well, you could do an awesome african cichlid display with heaps of fryeri and some big synos, lots of peacocks and haps. Otherwise marine qwould be good but pricey. Amazon with discus and stuf would be awesome if you have good planting and metal halides, otherwise IMHO it doesn't look "green" enough. I say either go full planted or rocks. I'm not really into americans, good size tank for them and would look kool but malawi's have better colours

davidb
here are some nice pics of central american fish_ I'm not sure which are available in NZ- except Cuban cichlid def in N.Z
herefishiefishie
How experienced is your mate? Be easier if he is still a bit raw to go with African Cichlids rather than Americans. Easiest of all would be just a huge tropical set up. but they look best with plants, can be a bit of work there. Best bet is to google tank set ups, tropical, cichlids etc. See what your friend likes. The more they like it the better it will be. How about a whole lot of emoticons? DavidB, AFAIK festae and tetracanthus aren't available in NZ. G. balzani is also from south america and is much too peaceful to be mixed with the other fish you posted. The tank isn't very wide considering its length, so not really ideal for a CA community. Maybe a big male jag and a big male red devil would work, put some big rocks/wood in the middle so they can each have their own space. Would make a good tank for frontosa tho. Or maybe a group of around 6-8 uaru, some other SA cichlids (geo's, festivums, etc) some catfish, lots of driftwood etc.
davidb
i was just beind silly- i knew those CA fish would nver fit in that piddly lil 8fter. thats my dream freshwater tank though- a 20ft central american ciclid tank!
David R
It would make a good breeding tank for a pair of festae, plenty of space to seperate them if needed. Another cool fish that doesn't seem to be available here, even tho its on the allowed list under the old name of cichlasoma.
