what level of aquarium do these fish swim

They are incline to hang around either the top or bottom.

do you think a pair would be ok with rainbows ?

Good question, I have never really thought about it, SJO's tend to hang around - where as rainbows tend to be very active.

SJO's like their food but the nature of rainbows may push them off it??

SJO's = Fundulopanchax sjoestedti = Blue gularis = King of killies.

what do they eat ?

Most Aquarium meaty foods, a good flake that kind of thing + live or frozen insects.

what is there personality like ?

They are confident and bossy fish however they are also soft bodied so do not react well to being pushed around, I would not call them aggressive.

Only if you buy them from your LFS.

When they came back to NZ just under two years ago, they were selling for $75 a pair.

Check out the breeders in the NZKA to get a bargain, and get a better bargain by being a member and getting a discount.

I have keep and breed rainbows before, so know there behavior and I am the guy that bought the original breeding stock of blue gularis from which the t/m seller's breeding stock originated.

As for your question...

Hard to say it's not a clear cut thing, it depends on the set of your tank and If you pay attention to whether the killies are getting the food they need - they could be just fine and a nice addition.

They are a fish that can become more of a pet then just a fish in a tank.
