Hello, Would like to hear peoples experinces with dog wormer tablets with there fish.

I tried it last weekend. What a disaster. Most fish have died and I am thinking the rest will be going that way soon.

I used the Billy Peach lifecycle Ultra all wormer

50mg prazi

225mg Oxibendazole

Dose was 2 tablets per 50 ltrs.

All fish stop eating. Seem like it burn there gill and skin. they started to develop fungus on the fins. I did twice daily water changes to dilute the meds but too late.

Then dosed with melafix and white spot cure to try and reduce the fungus growth. The fungus is gone but the fish are still dying off.

Feeling rather upset and guilty at the moment, have killed off all my fish.

Hi Jayci, I have just treated a 90 litre tank with discus using the Drontal tablets for large dogs - I think it had 175 mg of praziquantel in them ... it looked like a bomb went off in the tank and they were quite skitterish for about an hour after it went in but no devestating effects have appeared

I was treating for gill flukes what were you hoping to get rid of?

NZ Import rules often make it improfitable to import low usage medications for most companies, so we miss out on a lot of the medications seen overseas.

Unofficially the easiest way is probably to order a small pack from eBay etc and hope it makes it to you in the mail.

Importing a prescription medication from overseas is very similar to trying to get any illegal drug (marijuana, P, etc) shipped into NZ according to "the man". I strongly recommend going through your local vet before attempting this.

As for wormers, I've used Drontal many times with no ill effects. The thing is, you treat a 20L bucket and "dip" the fish, not the entire tank, and you only do this when the fish refuse to eat. Otherwise, you medicate discus tucker (1/4 pill per 3 blocks of tucker) and feed it to the fish right away as meds have limited lifespans when mixed with food.

Sorry for your loss and if I may speak from experience; if you make a mistake with meds, don't pussyfoot the water changes. If I medicate a tank and notice ill effects it's an immediate 50% water change on the entire tank. While running around with buckets of pre-warmed dechlorinated water for a couple hours isn't very fun, it's rewarding to see the fish feeling better and can save heap$$$.

no personal experience and that is because ive read all the horror stories, i would only use it if no other option is available and they were going to die anyway- seems it usually speeds up that process :(

hope everyone whos had bad experiences with it catches it in time and their fish recover
