fishy_t
Hey guy's I've just set up a new tank for my bichir and was wondering if anyone has ideas on a good tank mate... I keep giving him neon's as friends but they just disappear The tank is only 3' so I don't have that much room - I was thinking maybe a Butterfly fish? I want to try and keep it as natural as possible when it comes to fish so only African's really. Any ideas??!
candy
my butterfly and bichir live happly togeather as well as with my BG knife. large tetras work well. only prob with the butterfly is that most will only eat live food .. but that can be kinda fun
fishy_t
so what kind of live food do you feed your butterfly? Will they eat worms?
snookie
how about a ctenopoma (Spelling) ?, they are a african fish , but they may grow a bit big ? congo tetra , silver distichodus major plant eater though :-?
fishy_t
Yeah I used to have some silver distichodus, awesome fish but they would eat the plants and I want to have a planted tank for once! I did think about ctenopoma's too but I think they would be too big... Pencil's are nice fish too and might just be big enough - but aren't they from S. America??! Thanks for the idea's

fishy_t
Yeah I've alway's liked killies - even though I've never had any... I guess they would be big enough but we don't get many down here in Welly! Does anyone know of any locally?! Also does anyone who has them think they would be good?? fishy_t
Yeah King Killies sound interesting... I've stuck a post in the killie section to try and find out from some of the experts!; http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/here-vp231815.html#231815 I've had a look on google for a King Killie but couldn't find any pics... anyone got any leads on that??! Kribs are definatly a good idea - I've thought about them but really don't want to start breeding them again, cause I don't really want a pair taking over the tank, will probably get a nice male though
fishy_t
Yeah I like syno's and I've got one with my Fronts and have had a few in the past, but I think they would get a big in the long run... I think elephant nose's are a big ugly really... Interesting fish I know but not my type! African knife would be very nice! But can we get them here??
davidb
you wouldn't want an elephantnose with a birchir. the birchir would drive it crazy i think. elephantnoses are best in species tanks or with discus etc i reakon
fishy_t
Definatly no elephant nose's then... Do you have any idea's david?
davidb
synos and african knifes look good bet. perhaps a butterfly
fishy_t
Yeah I think I'm going to go for a butterfly and kribs - maybe just the one, maybe a pair - I didn't really want to have kribs breeding in there but I guess if I put a pot for them right at one end they shouldn't cause too much trouble... Are the African Knifes available? I've never seen any...
