Gatito
Haha, i've only had my turtle a couple of months, and as it's been getting colder, today he finally got his tank heater. The whole tank hasn't warmed up yet, so.... He hasn't left it since it heated up, except to have a bask for a while, and whenever we come near the tank. Thought i'd share - it's always a celebration when my proud, sullen boy does something cute P.S. In the first pic he also looks decapitated. Clever boy

Gatito
yeah 'course. will have to get the tank looking tidier tho - i want a background to hide the cords outside the tank, and am waiting on some nice flat river stones for his shelf - he likes to eat anything smaller
davidb
hehe my axolotls have a similar disposition. now i make sure all the pebbles are more than 2cm big
Gatito
Lol i miss axies (mum bred them when i was a kid) Vegas' tank is nice and minimal - otherwise any stones get dug into, kicked into the water, then an attempt to swallow them is made. Too much trouble, and too much time to clean the shelf

Gatito
hay gatito did u know ur turtle has a terrible case of shell rot? since u only had him for couple of month i am guessing he came like that. Hey fishboi, i can't even see the evidence in the pic - what gives it away? When he arrived he looked just like this, and had small dots of light soft shell, which i thought was rot, which are getting better. Also in the last week or so his shell has been shedding - which are the dark sections you can see on the rim of his shell near the front in the first pic - each of the plates that shed has had a very thin flake slowly come off, leaving the black colour underneath. Omigod, is that shell rot? i assumed he was shedding shell... We have the reptile light, which he spends lots of time under, and the turtle block thing in the water, and nice expensive turtle sticks. This is a clearer pic of his shell - from maybe about a month ago. You can see the original bronzy colour of the plates before they each "shed", and also the tiny soft bits i was focussed on worrying about: HELP!! panicking now... repto
in the first pic on the edge of the shell?looked a bit pinkish inflamed?hard to tell from the photos but the other just looks like shedding will fix it.Maybe he has been kept in a place with no sun and UV?people often buy all the right lights etc but fail to take into account they only have limitted life time even though they still go no effective uv rays are produced,12 mths would see most of them stuffed.Just keep him warm.,good varied diet, sunlight if possible and clean water. Thanks repto. Pinkish? Can you show me where on the pic? I can't see it and haven't noticed anything in person... He has a hutch - on sunny days he goes out in it on the grass with me while i read a book How warm should the heater be turned up to? if he's going to cuddle it i don't want to irritate his skin
fishboi
like repto said its nothing that good up keeping and shedding over time wont cure. only suggestion is to buy ur self a heater protector.
