CMG
our ice blue female has not been eating for the last few days or so, and has been very queit not swimming much and hiding, we took her out and put her in a tank by herself, and I have just found her lying on the bottom, still breathing but it is not looking good. it doesnt look like she has any fight wounds and all our other fish seem fine. Does any one have any ideas what is wrong with her or what we could possibly do??
herefishiefishie
Has the fish darkened in colour at all? Frenchy
CMG
No she is pretty much the same colour as she always is.
herefishiefishie
Is her breathing heavier than the other fish? Frenchy
ryanjury
is she looking skinny or fat? Is her anus sticking out at all? It could be bloat.
CMG
She is breathing faster than normal, and I just had a look at her again and she does appear darker than normal
CMG
She looks the same size but now that you mentioned her anus. Her waste seems to come out white instead of the standard brown.

CMG
after reading that article it seems like she could possibly be in the late stages of bloat. what symptoms did your one have before you medicated her. With everything shut today we cant get ahold of the medication she will need.
ryanjury
when i pulled her out she was still her normal size.. pooing white stuff, breathing heavily hanging around the back of the tank and off her food for a few days..

CMG
we have an electric yellow now who is not very active and just sitting on the bottom. All the other fish seem fine, could it be anything else besides bloat?
ryanjury
can you take any pics? Does the fish match upto the descriptions in the link I posted?
CMG
I dont erally want to stress them out more with camera flashes. They both look like they normally do the ice blue is just a bit darker than normal. Neither of them have abdominal swelling. The electric yellow is just slow moving and hanging out near the bottom and hiding. the ice blue lies on the bottom and then will swim a bit but she is a bit wobbly. and they both seem to be breathing alot faster than normal I think it probably is bloat they seem to have the symptoms, the ice blue in particular. I have no idea why these two have got it, i hope no more do
ryanjury
YEah id go for bloat just because its with your malawi's and thats similair to what happened to me when I had bloat in my tank.. Also their is some discussion regading it being a parasite so might be best to pull the sick fish out and stick them in their own tank even with epson's salt to help relieve any swelling etc.. CMG
Yea we stuck them in a tank by themselves and put some empson salt in earlier today when we put the ice blue out there. I hope she makes it we just sold our extra female ice blue last week! and the electric yellow is our only female sofar that will breed! Ill have to go to the vet in the morning and get some medicine, thanks for your help

herefishiefishie
The white poo, leans me towards bloat too. Metronidazole is commonly known as flagyl. Also what do you normally feed your Africans. Might be a problem with what you feed them. Frenchy
CMG
we normally feed them algae sticks for cichlids and cichlid pellets, also brine shrimp flake and spirilina flake. do i need to treat all the fish or just the ones that are displaying symptoms
CMG
the only change to there diet was the brine shrimp flake whihc we started giving them about a month ago.
Tiden
I would treat all of them to be on the safe side. Hope they get better for ya
herefishiefishie
Cut back on the brine shrimp flake. I would say once the container is finished. Don't buy another one. Make the main part of the diet spirulina. Frenchy
CMG
Well the electric yellow didnt make it through the night, we got the metro stuff from the vet this mornin, but must have been to late cause the ice blue died not long ago. All of the other fish seem fine so hopefull no more get sick. Thanks for everyones help! If anyone has an ice blue female for sale or have young ice blues let us know.
