sorcha
Hi I have recently joined this site, I also bought a fishtank through trade me the other day, I currently have a 70cmx60x60 and am looking to upsize. The tank I bought is a corner tank 187cmx70 deep & 108cm front to back corner, I paid the next day $200 it comes with a steel stand & some bits & pieces, all a bit rough but was told good condition & sound just needed cosmetic surgery on appearance of the stand. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 268161.htm I have been trying to arrange courier/freight all week with no luck so finally arranged to take a trailer up tomorrow to pick it up 5 hrs away. I just received an email tonight saying that she had cleaned it for the first time (she has only used it for lime chips & plants etc) and has found a big crack through the bottom of the tank! The bottom corner I think. http://mail.google.com/mail/h/1dttulg0m ... 016073d3ae She will not budge on price though will refund me. Any advice on what to do would be great? How strong would it be? Is it worth $200? I have already bought a few more fish to pick up next week & although I would have room in my current tank I had been counting on being able to transfer a few over to the new tank first. The bottom line also I guess is that I am after a new/used tank LARGE.Preferably with stand & any extras a bonus, I'm not after spending heaps of money, I have been looking forward to this one but don't think i can justify paying the original price for what I thought was a sound tank to paying the same price for the same tank with a crack, prob wouldn't have looked twice had I known it was cracked... HELP!? Cheers sarah.
GZ_Loach
just place a sheet of glass over top with silcone (good as new), aslong as the crack doesnt go from one end to the other
shadowfax
get a refund & then see if she lists it again at a lower price.
alanmin4304
I would go for a refund as I would be concerned about why it broke. T he standmay not be very straight or something. Seems a coincidence the crack got recently discovered and it had not contained water.
sorcha
Hey thanks for all your advice, have asked for a refund to be safe, I guess it could be fixed but like you said why did it crack in the first place? Looking at another photo she sent last night the legs of the stand did look a bit crooked. I will see if she relists it & go from there. So if anyone ever knows of any large tanks for sale drop me a PM. Cheers everyone, Sarah
mystic_beth
I would get a refund. Don't trust stuff like that. Also if ever you use silicone be sure it's the right stuff for aquariums or you will kill your fish dead as door nails I have been caught out times gone past with cheap tanks. As already mentioned the stand could be warped. The glass may not be thick enough for the volume of water held. Lots of things to look into. My foray into sea horses 4 years back, and a pet shop that sold tanks cheap (had them made by a backyarder that worked in a window business) saw me rescuing sea horses from certain death on two occasions and the shop coming out with loan tanks while mine was fixed or replaced. First time I was visiting when I had an intuition I had to get home now! The hexagonal tank had craked in one of it's panes..salt water all over carpet..and enough left in tank to catch with tupperware and chuck sea horses into it. (at this point I hadn't gotten a spare tank.) Second time I wake up in the middle of the night, one week later, and the replacement tank, a taller than average 2.5 footer had the front pane bowed out (there was no brace for the top) Fishies back in spare tank I had obtained the shop came back for the tank and fixed it to the specs I got off a hobbyist at work. Lots of hassel and extra trips to collect sea water! (Tassie Seahorses they were) So avoid potential hassel. In any case it will take more than a week for your large tank to be ready to stick your fish in. Then only a couple at a time to avoid toxic shock. Frustrating I know. Good luck
AMAZONIAN
Hi and bad luck, I would be asking for a refund AS IT WAS NOT DESCRIBED HONESTLY AS IT IS, and see if it gets relisted at a lower price, and a statement about the crack. I depends where the crack is, how long it is and is it ECONOMIC to repair. It could be a "stress" crack through the tank being slightly out of alignment when built or it has sat on an uneven surface, thereby stressing the whole tank. Or and more probable; it got damaged while it was being cleaned. Something dropped onto the glass. If you have a 5 Hour drive; specifically to pick it up, then consider the cost of running the vehicle at 68 cents per Kilometre, plus the GST., and your time. I dont think the tank is worth the money they asked for it. I had it on my "Watch:List" as I had someone who would bring it down to me for free. But when I saw what they had I just said that tank is not worth that money.
