SAFFABOY
Can anyone give me some advice on glass types suitable for aquariums. My father built a huge 3 meter x1000x1000 concrete tank for his marines ages ago.It was lined with fibreglass etc with one big sheet of glass somehow stuck to the front. I'm thinking about a similar tank for my new house. What type of glass would suit that situation. How much would i look at paying for a sheet 3000x1000 aprox. What would be the best way of sealing the concrete or bricks it will be built from inside? This would be for a fresh water tank with discus etc. Who would be a good person to approach for glass prices? Thanks
quack
i would go to some glass companys, it will be very expencive i would think that it would have to be toughened and very thick. maybe you could add supports vertically though the front veiwing side and have maybe 3 pices of glass insted of the 1, this way it will be stronger and wouldnt need as grunty glass? just an idea
evilknieval69
imagine accidently dropping it when being installed
ryanjury
Yeah id somehow go with 2-3 pieces of glass for the front with supports between each piece and along the top. If you can buy a 5ft tank relatively cheaply then you could do it I guess, the height is a problem though, just for comparasion I have a 4ft tank thats 900high and its made from 15mm glass I guess you would need somewhere around that for your tank, how did your dad go about getting his glass and what thickness did he use? Luke*
that would be such an awesome tank with excellent inhabitants, i hope you do it!
Faran
I know a guy in WGTN with 2 pieces of 3.7m x 1m 12mm glass. You're too far away and I'm not even going to get into calculating safety ratios... Warren would be the person to talk to, as I'm pretty sure he's built something similar in the past... it's in the National Aquarium now, if memory serves. lduncan
If you want some good ideas for a really high quality method for constructing composite aquariums, check out my website here: http://www.nzreefs.com/Royal%20Exclusiv ... ction.html (for some reason the photo previews aren't showing on that page) If you click on "Start Slide Show" you can see them. Basically is steps through the construction of a ply / concrete / PVC sheet composite tank build, by a German company called Royal Exclusiv. It might give you a good idea of how the front glass is mounted, and various alternatives to messing with fibreglass etc. Layton
Warren
For the size you want you'll need at least 19mm glass with 25mm preferred. You could use 2 x 12mm laminated to do the same job but you will have to make sure the edge is perfectly sealed so it doesn't delaminate. Would be a great project... TM
Why not drop the height a bit, then you could use thinner glass.
SAFFABOY
Yeah, from recollection my old mans tank had two laminated sheets of about 25mm.Anyone know what price a sheet of this size would cost?
Warren
I think the max thickness available now as a single is 19mm. Above this you have to laminate to get the thickness you want. I haven't worked out what the requirements for thickness are for laminated panels but I'd expect they'd be reasonably similar to solid glass...
