cichfanatic
Can someone give me good advice? Has anyone here used toughened glass before and had problems I’m planning a tank 1800x700x700 and have a few options on type of glass to use Either 12mm annealed or 10 or 12 mm toughened I’m building this tank to sit in tank stand so bottom of tank will be fully supported I have built large tanks for myself in the past but not as wide and high as this one out of annealed Anyway that’s why I’m thinking about using toughened glass I also realize that toughened is about 5 times stronger than annealed on the faces but can shatter with just a tap to its edge Thinking should I go for toughened of using alum protective corner extrusion to protect all the edges Bottom glass panel is going to be drilled with holes for sump and filter inlets and outlets So any feed back much appreciated
smidey
I dont know a great deal about glass but have had a bit of experience with it. Toughened is quite strong but very brittle on the edges & it will also curve if forced. It will have to be drilled before being toughened. Think it may be better to discuss with a glazier first. cichfanatic
Hey thanks for the feed back Looks like 12mm annealed is the way to go with good bracing Still has anyone out there used toughened glass and had it explode on them? What a disaster that would be for fish and house
alanmin4304
I made a tank out of 3 doors from a bank in 12mm toughened glass and I gave it to a friend 20 years ago and it is still going OK.
TM
Is the extra cost worth it? Have you checked up on toughend glass prices?

alanmin4304
Mine cost $10.00 at an auction-- Worth checking second hand stuff
cichfanatic
The cost isn't an issue as I have a few friends in the glass industry So can get the glass at a good price I used to be a glazier probably 7 years ago now was in the glass industry for 20 years so have used toughened glass for many applications but never for a fish tank. A little bit apprehensive as I know sometimes it can shatter without warning and any apparent reason Just interested to see if anyone has used it and how well the glass stayed together Seems to me cheaper option 12mm annealed is the way to go Thanks for all your feedback
quack
i am also in the glass industry, and the price of toughened is far higher than the price of normal float glass. unless you can get it secound hand like alanmin4304 said then its baiscly out of the question as far as the price goes. off the top of my head i think its 2-3x the price as normal

quack
didnt mean to upset you  im just saying the extra price out weighs the benifits there are probly heaps of tanks out there around your size and probley bigger and would just been 10mm imo i would rather the 12mm like you suggested with good bracing

alanmin4304
Can you drill toughened glass and what would be the advantage of toughened? I built a tank in a cabinet for a restaurant and made the front from laminated glass in case some drunken idiot tried to break it in which case it would have leaked rather than explode like toughened would. The place went broke before it opened and it is now in my lounge.

quack
once the glass is toughened then thats it. the only thing you can do is maybe sand about 5-10mm off each edge and even thats doogey.
