Sick seahorse???

Recommended Posts

This is a question for seahorse mad, or anyone else with any ideas.

One of my wee girls is not that great. She doesn't look like she is eating, although I can't watch her 24 hours a day. She has a white mark on her side that is about 1 1/2 - 2 mm round. No other spots that I can see, so don't think its whitespot. Continually hides in a large hole under the live rock. I have isolated her in a small floating plastic container and dosed her with some antibiotic from the lfs. adding a little water every hour to keep things fresh, don't have a seperate tank. Water is at 18 degees so would prefer to keep her in the same environment as the others. Did a 20% water change 5 days ago, been about 2 weekly lately. Tried hand feeding her yesterday and she took a little food, does not seem to want any today. Any help appreciated.

Hi If

Sounds like she could possibly have a few problems. Is the seahorse a Kuda or potbellied sick. I feel that sometimes taking them away from there tank mates does more harm. I would put her back into the main tank as that may stop her stressing. You could start giving her fresh water bath with declorinated water every day. Put her in a container that is the same temp as your tank and has a hitching post for between 2 - 5 minutes. If she starts stressing out completely take her out. Can you tell me what medication you are using on her as well.

If you would like you are more than welcome to PM me and we can discuss further

Hope that helps

Did 20% water change, have been doing this weekly anyway at the moment as it is a relatively new tank. Gave her a fresh water bath. Needed to adjust PH. Quite happy in there, id not seem stressed at all. Took her out after 8 mins and put her back in the main tank. She bobbed up and down a bit, looked like she was happy enough - better than before, then she went into the back again and has stayed there. Will try again tomorrow. lfs said try the frest water bath for longer as some of the pathogens that might be causing the illness could take longer to kill. I guess it's do or die. Will be going food hunting tomorrow to find something nice and tasty for her. The other two horses are very healthy, so at least if I lose one it's not too much of a major.
