slimNZ
Hi all, I've got 2 platys and 2 Dwarf Gourami in a 3 weeks old 60L tank. One of the platy is scraping itself agains the hard surface every few minutes and the others is starting to do it. From what I read, this is a sign of parasite. I can't see anything on the skin or gills and not sure what type of parasite it is. I have been changing 10L of water everyday since I got the fish, which is 2 weeks ago. Other than a platy that diead the very next day when they arrive, the rest of the fish has been fine - well till now. I also added a few plants from various source during this time. If it is a parasite, should I up the tempreture? Appreciate if you can recommand a madication that can be source in Wgtn and will not ruin the biological filter that I hope will kick in soon. Name of the shop that carry it will be good. TIA, Sam
caserole
Hi Sam It could be a parasite it sounds like it but it could also be irritation of the fish skin due to you tank cycling still. If you do have a parasite it is most likely white spot look for tinny white specks on the fins. If it is your water then you will need to do a water change, do you have test kits to check were your tank is in the bio cycle ammonia , nitrite and nitrate. slimNZ
Hi caserole, Ammonia level is high on 1 and Nitrite and Nitrate are on 0. Well, I just switch to a canister filter as the hangon I got is very noisy and is driving the family nuts. Will do a 1/3 water change. The sick platy is silver in colour so it is hard to sport and he always hide behind the heater. However, I just found a pin head white dot on anoter platy with black tail. It is ich? I have Melafix at home, is it the medicine for it? Thanks, Sam
caserole
It may be, but then again fish get the odd spot and the next day it's gone. But if you see more and more then yes it probably is, don't treat just yet but keep a close eye on them. Water change as you mentioned is good, just make sure the water is same temp as tank you don't want to stress fish any more then they are. Keep testing water you will notice nitrite kick in next. You may like to do smaller water changes more often, say 5% a day to avoid the swings in your water chemistry.
