rnbo
Been away for 10 days and... Is this cyano?? Is only in the Riccia on the surface of the tank, can the poor riccia be redeemed or is it a dump job??
Caryl
Yes it is cyano. If you only got it while you were away, what was different? Fix that and the cyano will disappear again. Pull as much of it off the riccia as possible and it will recover.
rnbo
Thx Caryl...only thing different was much reduced feeding of flake via Eheim auto feeder (probably not many shrimp pellets or pleco chips droppedin usually feed 8 bristles and 2yoyo loaches 6shrimp and 4 pleco chips)...fish and rest of aquarium fine and they were jolly pleased to see me though!! Do you think that the riccia can be saved with a good wash with tap water??
quack
i have this. what is it? is it bad for the plants and fish. and how do i get rid of it? thanks for any help!!
antwan
It's cyano bacteria, usually comes about just like other algaes...and imbalance somewhere. You can use erythromycin to get rid of it too, works a treat and doesn't affect the fish at all.
Devon
E.mison are a type of pill I got from the LFS. This stuff worked great. just had to help out by removing every sign of the algae e.g off rocks etc etc. Have you noticed that that algae smells also? Caryl
Cyano doesn't hurt the fish but can smother the plants and looks unsightly. You should be able to pull the majority off the plants with your fingers as it will come off in sheets or strings. It will not wash off well. Remove as much as possible then black out the tank for 3 days and see if that fixes it. As a last resort, erythromycin will get rid of it but it is a prescription only medicine. Devon, I assume you mean E-mycin? How did you get that from the lfs? It is a prescription medicine!
