Ira
Dead is dead. Almost dead can recover.
JDM
this would depend on how you mean "live". most if not all of us start with dead coral as base rock, this will go through a bacteria cycle, after this cycle is complete it is then referred to as live rock, it is live in the form of bacteria that live in the small pores of the rock, this bacteria preform a very important part of the filtration in most reef systems. as far as a coral that is dead returning to it former glory, not in my experience. jetskisteve
Some dead coral CAN become live, ie: Acro's will regrow over dead skeleton
