glass prices

just been on the phone to get some supports for the top of my new tank, i cant believe the price range :o for 2 bits 5mm thick, 46cm X 15cm the range was from $17 to $171. it was around $20 extra to have the edges polished from most places & some said the could just "run a stone around it" for nothing & it would be fine to use. the $171 price was with polished edges & i had to ask the lady to repeat the price because i thought i had heard wrong   so it pays to shop around!

im an aluminum joiner, so i get most of my glass free or cheaper than trade, i think that you should go around some joinerys and sweet talk to them because they should have stacks of 5mm glass that they would happly give you!

at work we through out heaps of glass!

the higher priced one will probably be because they are cutting off their sheets (im not up on glass terms), not using cutoffs. i had a $40 price difference in getting lids because one company quoted me using proper sheets and the other just used cutoffs.

Take in half a dozen cold ones, smile sweetly, tell them what you want, just say, outa ya scraps would be fine and hey presto.

They'll have the caps off before your out the door.

It is really only two louver blades, and I have heaps that size, but too far away also.

I get my glass from a large glazing firm in town and usually work with 10 mm glass. I would use 10mm glass for any bracing (European). They have large pieces left over from glazing windows that are generally too small to be used in other windows. Always say cash and I don't need a receipt. They usually throw in the bracing right round, top and bottom. It will be cheaper to sand the edges yourself. It is better to have the braces polished to remove any chips which will severely weaken the brace, but it is expensive and so far I have not bothered. I have bought the tank and bracing top and bottom in 10mm glass for a 1200x500x500 tank for about your highest quote.

Good news on getting yours sorted :)

We moved in a 450L 12mm tank and the base cracked. We needed hired help to move it in to place, so to get it fixed we need a team to come pick it up, take it to theirs, install a 5' x 2' piece of 12mm glass, then bring it back and reinstall it.

I am REALLY not looking forward to the quote.

I could fix it myself but I literally dont have the ability to move it around.

Yeah I'm the Breeding Co-Ordinator for the UHAS. We've only really just pulled the club back out of recess, and I dont want to be too much of a pain in the bottom lol

Its a really heavy tank and really awkward. Have been recommend the usual guy (good ol' Pete), so will see what he says, if there is some crazy cost then yeah I'll bribe some people with some beers for sure.

      ive just put the bracing on the top & will leave it awhile before i fill it, it says 7 days to cure, not sure if i ned to wait that long just for the bracing but i think i will just in case. then i will find out if my resealing job is good enough, it looks pretty ugly but the worst is at the back   I'll let you all know if it springs a leak!
