HelifaxNZ
I've just done a water test for dkH and CA, 8dkH 700 ppm CA The Calcium seems to be very high. Is this ok? I think the dkH is about right. Cheers.
reef
redo the test as test kit could be stuffed. at 700ppm calcium you would expect a far lower kh.
HelifaxNZ
Will do. Thanks.
HelifaxNZ
Ok, after a retest here's the result: 8dkH 620 ppm CA
KP
How do you add your calcium?
reef
try new test kits or get somesome to test with their kits. your kh has stayed the same, i would have thought that would have dropped after a few days.
HelifaxNZ
I haven't been very scientific about how I put CA in the water. I have the liquid Calcium +3 Red Sea at the moment so finishing this off. Been putting a squeeze in every week. dkH has remained the same. It was on 7dkH, but had added bicarb which had raised it by 1dkH. Will get my water tested by someone else just to confirm it is not my test kit (which is a couple of months old )
artful
I think you need to be a bit more scientific with your water chemistry. Test then amend.
HelifaxNZ
Thanks Steve for your help. Using Salifert testing kit here's the results of my water chemistry... 7.7 dkH Over 500 ppm for Calcium (we only tested upto 500) 1270 Mg Steve can't understand how my tank can sustain the high Calcium. Any comments welcome. Cheers.
cookie extreme
did you make your own rock? used any cement compounds within the tank? there is no way that your CA goes up or is even stable without increase from somewhere be it CA reactor, Limewater aka Kalkwasser (to some degree) or other additives. or your test kit is faulty (or your to drunk when you test it  )
reef
haven't been very scientific about how I put CA in the water. I have the liquid Calcium +3 Red Sea Your anwer is as above. you put to much in. with the low load on your tank it will take some time to drop as your coral cant use it all unless you have a tank loaded with acropora/sps I would do a 20% water change to help reduce it. HelifaxNZ
Yes, I'll be stopping the addition! Anyone got any Acro's frags! Maybe now they will thrive. Had tried them a while ago and they didn't do well. Thanks for the comments.
reef
i doubt because you got high calcium they will thrive. calcium that high is no good for many corals especially xenia
HelifaxNZ
Funny you should mention Xenia. I was wondering why my Xenia's were looking a little sad. Thanks for the tip!
