Whiskas
I think my male platy has pop eye I noticed this morning that one of his eyes appears to protrude further than the other. He has been a little lathargic but has been eating (but not enthusiastically). None of the other fish appear to be sick in any way. What causes it? Is it contagious? And how can i cure it? sharn
pop eye is bacterial, it can just happen out of the blue or can result from a knock or scratch which gets icky. its not contagious as far as i know i cured the beginnings of popeye in my male apisto with furan-2. i didnt know it did popeye but it was the only thing i had on hand that did internal bacteria and it worked wonderfully. a light dose of epsom salts can help too to releive the pressure
Whiskas
It now appears he may have dropsy. His scales are poking out, a bit like a hedgehog. If he has dropsy the best thing to do is kill him isn't it? Then do i need to treat the rest of the tank? and if so how? (in the tank there are BN's, platies, guppies, neon tetras and baby platies) I have already treated the tank with Melafix as it is a antibacterial and done a 20% water change, will this be enough? Or would you suggest something else?
evilknieval69
If it looks like dropsy then it is best to euthanise. I had a female fighter with dropsy a little while ago in my 250L planted tank with heaps of other fish, so i euthanised and then watched the other fish closely for a while, and it was all sweet. sharn
i would seperate her and try to treat her/euthanaise her. there arent any known cures for dropsy but now and again you hear of people who cure it. i think dropsy only becomes contagious if the other fish pick at the fish or have contact with the corpse (cause thats when any fluids or whatevers contagious would come out)
Whiskas
I have euthanised him And am keeping a close eye on the rest. His girlfriend was a bit put out and searched for him. she now happily swims with the other pair of platies.
