Hazzard
I just placed a live mussel in my fish only system with my puffers. Has anyone else tried this for feeding? How long will will a cold water mussel live in a tropical marine tank?
wasp
I've had the odd one & they seem to last a long time, I've ended up removing them after several months have not had one die. Just bear in mind if one did die it would be quite a bit of pollution.
Hazzard
Yes i always remove any debris quite quickly. I used to just put in the empty shells for them to chew on but this time i decided to try the whole thing.
petplanet
Wouldn't worry about it dying. If it does that puffer will scoff it.
Hazzard
They've spent the last two hours chipping away at the shell trying to get the flesh.I would say by morning the mussel will be gone anyway.

trinity
Hey Trinity, does your puffer have a go at your corals and you anemone? My doggy is in a fish only tank that he shares with a Highfin Blennie. Would love to try him out in my reef tank, but the tangs is that tank would have him for dinner
Hazzard
My guys will eat most types of coral. Thats why i wanted to try and entertain them with this mussel. I do have one coral in with them and they seem to just leave it alone. My biggest problem is the amount of waste these guys make. Its hard to keep the tank in top condition. TimTam22
hes very cool, how big is he?
trinity
Yeh....I know what you mean about the waste. I could not believe the size of the pooos that came out of my Blue Spot puffer, Compared to the little ones the Dog face was doing. The Blue is also a lot more aggresive than the dog face hence they are in sifferent tanks now. Mind you they are both still little babies  What puffers have you got Hazzard, I think they are so cool. My dog face is already my fav and is very gentle with me. I can put my hand in the tank, lift him out of the tank resting in the palm of my hand. where as the blue has already tried to eat the end of my finger. TimTam22
I think that comment calls for pic's of all the puffers, even if its in a new thread. I love this clip and the music makes it sooooo much cuter
Hazzard
The big puffer in the photo is about 20cm and the small cute one is about 14cm. The porcupine puffer not shown in the same tank is about 15cm.
Hazzard
Just a morning after update, mussel was looking very sad in the morning. Shell was cracked and chipped with some flesh eaten. Removed it and it was still alive, so i opened it and fed the rest to the guys. This experiment worked really well with my puffers, kept them entertained for ages, they loved it!
