SilverBlade86
I was just taking a few pictures just now, and came across a few scary things I've never noticed before. 1. My male guppy has COMPLETELY black eyes. Its just basically 2 round black things. He can see well enough I'm sure, he was just chasing a female around just now, and could run away from my net when I tried to get him. Is this a dangerous problem? I dont know how I missed this for so long. Also, how can I differentiate between markings and fight marks? When I used a small light to try to get a better picture (my tank has no light, and it's only source is the window next to it) I noticed the male guppy had red marks on it. Now, I do not know if the guppy is just maturing properly and his colours are finally showing, or if he and the other Betta in the tank are duking it out. I doubt it is the Betta though, he just sits in the plants and sleeps all day. The Betta rarely comes out of its hiding spot, and runs away when I get close. The rest of the fishies (WCMMs, Swords and Guppies) dont bother going close to his hiding place anyways. 2. SNAILS! I just saw a few really really tiny ones in a small bucket where I left some plants to grow in. I assume that the snails must have already gotten into the tank, will this be a huge problem? What steps could I take to remove them? And pictures (for Loopy, I apologize for the lousy pictures.):
Ira
First rule of owning fish. Don't look at them too close, you'll find things to worry about in perfectly healthy fish if you do that.
sharn
 @ ira- but it is true, even though its good to inspect your fish closely. sometimes when you look too close you can find things that dont seem right even if the fish is fine. i would say there is nothing to worry about with the guppies eyes at all as long as they arent cloudy, popping out etc. with fight marks you will normally see a break in the skin which has a definate outline (the edges of the wound). its kind of hard to explain without pictures  snails- well once theyre in there theyre pretty hard to get rid of 100% but its pretty easy to keep them at manageable levels. removing them at night time, investing in some fish that eat snails etc. using products which kill snails can be harmful to the tank because they cause spikes from all the dead snails so if you were to use that be careful. they can be pretty useful too depending on the type you have
wagonman
one of my catfish has completely black eyes aswell, dont worry bout it if the fish seems fine.
SilverBlade86
Is there actually a reason why its black though? Is it genetics? My female from the same lot doesnt have eyes like it at all.
Alan
Maybe it ran into Willie Mason. Alan
me love fishy
I have found some guppies has black eyes and some don't, can depend on their colouring, but is not an issue, I guess like some people have blue eyes and some have brown. Snails can be very difficult to get rid of. Are you going to get a light for your tank? It shows up your fishies colours much better. SilverBlade86
No light at this stage, I'm still in limbo about my next tank. I am still deciding if I should use the one I've acquired, or go for the easy way out and pay a little more to get one that has all included. But when I do get the tank though, I know it'll look better. Another question I've got: The betta up there in pictures refuses to come out of its hiding place (in the plants). I've managed to get it eating, and it comes out for a small swim once in a while but it prefers to hide/sleep/eat in the plants. Any way I could coax him out or should I just let him get used to the tank? He's been in there for about 2 weeks.
TimTam22
just leave him, anything you do could upset him more. Might last fighter use to do that all the time even after having him for 6months
Loopy
Don't worry too much about the wee betta. He is probably feeling insecure and a bit shocked about his new surroundings and has decided the plants are a nice safe place to hide from all those other spooky fish. Remember he is still only a wee baby and had spent his whole life in a tank full of brothers and sisters which he used to bully! I suggest being really patient and gentle around him and when he has built his confidence up he will be a lot betta

SilverBlade86
    Yeah, I was guessing that, hopefully he gets used to his surroundings. The other day, I was hoping he was calm enough to flare at his own reflection, so I showed him a mirror. First thing he did was run and hide at his usual hiding place. Wont do that again. I'll just feed him and leave him alone. Hopefully he'll be betta.
