shadowfax
i noticed a small faint red patch just above its mouth & didnt think much of it, didnt look like the skin was broken & i had been away for a few days & got back to find the top lip red & puffy & last nite a small red line appeared along its top fin & this morning its all the way along the fin. the lip is no longer puffy but still red & the fish is gulping alot, i seperated him last nite & added some aqua plus to the water, he looks abit better but i dont want to risk putting him back in with the others, does anyone know what this is? sharn
sounds like a bacterial infection to me. look into Furan 2, it does a wide range of bacterial problems and is quite gentle so it might be worth a shot? keeping the water extra clean will help too, good on you for putting him in another tank awsell

PETEYPLECO
Ooops sorry - sometimes they catch their mouths on stones / gravel when they feed and if your fish is like mine it likes to go bump other fish and may have caught its mouth on something sharpish causing the injury? shadowfax
thanks for your help but he died, he started gulping really fast & i got home from the fish shop & was to late, i was wondering if he had cut the inside of his mouth, im hoping to get a new tank & will shift my surinamensis out & use finer gravel
PETEYPLECO
So sorry to hear that. In that case its very likely it had some infection or the water conditions were out of kilter?
sharn
sorry to hear that shadow sounds like it must have been bacterial then and they can move fast when they want to
