jim r
Hi all, can anyone tell me what water conditions are needed to keep 5 oscars in a 450litre tank eg. temp,ph,size of filter?etc. Any and all information greatly appreciated thanks. cheers Jim. SpidersWeb
Oscars aren't really picky, as long as things are stable. Our specs are 27C temp, pH 7.4, and KH at 5dH (I have a small bag of coral sand in the filter) but whatever comes out of the tap will likely be fine. Most important is regular water changes, and keeping your nitrates at 0 (which requires water changes because they wont let you have plants). Filters I'd want turnover of at least 4x an hour on externals. So 450L x 4 = 1800Lhr, so a Fluval FX5, or a pair of Jebo 819's. Personally I'd go with three Jebo 819's, but thats just a personal preference. The biggest problem with oscars is their eating habits. I'm assuming you're talking adults. If you're getting those 2 inch babies that were imported, then a single external filter will keep you going for a while yet.

sharn
oscars are very hardy fish, if water params are stable then they will be fine you need at least 5x per hour when using canister filters, sumps etc and at least 10x per hour when you are using HOB's/internals etc. 5 oscars are probably not going to live happily together once they get to 6-8", oscars seem to 'pair up' and will pick on the one that doesnt have a friend, third wheel syndrome we call it  however six oscars are not going to fit in a 450L tank, i would see if you can get him to ditch one. IMO a 450L is bare minimum for 4 adult O's, thats only around 120gal so he will need to keep on top of his water changes and maintenence to keep the water quality good, i would suggest minimum of 40% weekly, i do 50-60% weekly on my lightly stocked 90gal- they are super messy
